Flintlock carbines had a flint or a flintlock, which produced the spark that ignited the gunpowder when the hammer was triggered. These types of weapons required manual reloading of their ammunition with each shot. The ammunition, inserted through the muzzle, consisted of gunpowder, bullet, and a paper wad, which served as a cap to hold the previous two munitions compressed within the barrel.

Initially, the Kentucky carbine was developed in Pennsylvania in the early 1700s and was widely used during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) as settlers were familiar with its use for hunting. These carbines accompanied the first American explorers in the conquest of the West and are often associated with Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. When the American Civil War (1861-1865) broke out, Confederates used these rifles due to a shortage of weapons.
